Free Pattern: easy peasy crocheted mittens for baby

These wee mittens match the crocheted ski hat pattern found here. They should fit between 6-12 months. If you need mittens for larger hands (up to 18 months) you can carry on increasing for a third time at the top and then increase the length. This is noted in the pattern.

As for the hat, these mittens are also stripy, but the pattern is written without colour direction so you can choose to leave it as a block colour or alternate the colours as you wish.

Hook size: 4.5mm/ size 7.

Yarn: I used some spare Robin chunky but any Aran weight (or chunkier worsted weight) will do.

Abbreviations: Chain- ch; slip stitch- ss; double crochet- dc (US single crochet); treble crochet- tc (US double crochet); double crochet 2 together- dc2tog (US sc2tog); treble crochet 2 together- tc2tog (US dc2tog).

  1. Oooh they are gorgeous, not much of a crocheter, more of a knitter, but they would be an ideal new baby pressie :)

  4. This mittens are so cute and ideal for me to try as I’m just learning to crochet. I have a few questions about the pattern though. First of all, for rows 3-9, should I chain 2 at the start of each row? If not, then where do I join with the sl st at the end of the row? Secondly, in row 2 it says ‘make 2 dcs in the next st space, 1dc in next st and then 2dcs in the next st space’ Do I work the 1dc in the stitch or in the stitch space?
Thank you so much for your help. I’m finding all of this quite confusing especially since I learned to crochet in Italian and English instructions are still a bit complicated for me!

    • Sorry Sarah Elizabeth, you’re right I left out ch2 for the rows, will amend now. For the next part, it should cover 3 stitches from the previous round, so 2 dcs in the first stitch space then move to the next stitch space and make 1 dc, then move to the next stitch space and make 2 dcs in there. It’s a way of increasing the circumference.

You’re great for learning in 2 languages! No doubt there will be some variation with the way the stitches are created, like between the US and the UK. And with knitting too, there is a whole European way that is the mirror of the way I learnt. Good luck and happy to answer any more questions. Fay x x

Sanity saver alert!!!! Thank you sooooo much! My neighbors son likes to scratch his skin … thanks so much for a pattern that I did in less than an hour. P.S. It’s time consuming telling a nine month old no and moving his hands away– every few minutes, while still attempting to crochet much needed Christmas gifts. LOL!!! If I have time I’ll make him the hat, too. Then the mittens will serve a double duty.

P.P.S. I tried my hand at knitting… cast on, cast off. And that was all she wrote. LOL. Will give it a try in another 10-15 years when I become a grandma. LOL. From since my pregnancy of my first son almost 7 years ago… I haven’t been able to go separated from my hooks and yarns for more than 3 days at a time. Always remember … Anything that is knitted can and has been duplicated by machines …. but to crochet is so exquisite, that only hands can replicate it’s beauty.
